How to File a Consumer Complaint in Chennai (Step by Step)
Consumer disputes — a defective product, a service provider who didn't deliver, an e-commerce order gone wrong — are handled by a separate set of commissions, not the regular civil courts, and the process is designed to be more accessible than a typical lawsuit.
Step 1: Try to resolve it directly first
Courts and commissions generally expect you to have made a genuine attempt to resolve the issue with the seller or service provider first. Keep a written record of this — emails, chat logs, or a formal legal notice — since it becomes part of your evidence later.
Step 2: Determine where to file
Depending on the value of the claim, a consumer complaint is filed before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the State Commission, or the National Commission. Most individual consumer complaints in Chennai are filed at the district level.
Step 3: File the complaint with supporting documents
- Proof of purchase (invoice, receipt, order confirmation)
- Any warranty or service agreement
- Communication showing you attempted to resolve it
- A clear statement of the loss or deficiency and what you're seeking
Step 4: Hearings and resolution
Consumer commissions are meant to move faster than civil courts, though in practice timelines vary with how contested the matter is. Many cases resolve through a hearing process without the same length of trial a full civil suit would involve.
The details that most affect the outcome are usually the ones people don't think to keep — timestamps on messages, the exact wording of a warranty, whether a complaint was raised within any deadline stated in the terms. Reviewing these with a lawyer before filing, rather than after a commission asks for them, tends to make the difference.
